get the dba to give you a proper backup.
you can try one more thing - rename the DAT file to .BAK. sometimes this works.

i dont think you need to use the "High Availability" (synchronous) SQL Mirroring option, though iam not sure.
Synchronized state means that mirror server is in nearly the same state...
