A week just simply even close to enough time to learn IIS and 3 version of windows server. This is the kind thing that you either know or you don't. There is no amount of reading that will get you anywhere near as much knowledge as having done it. Think about many of the things you do as a DBA. There just is no book knowledge even close to the little things you have learned on the job while you were doing it. No amount of reading can replace actually doing it.

I have no idea what the job is or what your skill set is. The questions they are likely to ask will be relevant to the position. Is this a DBA position? If so, they are probably wanting somebody who can also manage their web and windows servers. My guess is that once the interview is going they will have a pretty good sense of whether or not you have the skills they are looking for. I wish I could give you a better answer but the topic is HUGE. Hope the interview goes well. Good luck.

  • Thanks Sean,

The opening is for core SQL DBA but they have mentioned Windows 2003\2008 on their JD.

  • This is exactly why i wrote my guide for creating a virtual sql server 2008 cluster. It gives you exposure to Windows fundamentals and helps you grow confidence

Check the article in the SSC articles section 😉

  • As everyone else has said the topics are huge.

However in my past experience when companies have asked for knowledge of these areas it is generally been in the context of how SQL Server uses them.

Again in my experience most large organisations have seperate departments for SQL Admin, Windows Admin, Web Server admin etc etc which have their own experts in each field. So they would only look for some intermediate knowledge of the finer workings of the OS \ IIS.

Whereas small organisations generally want to have someone that can cover more areas as they probably wont have dedicated people for each role.

So for example the kind of questions I use and have been given for a large organisation are:

    1. What Performance Counters would you use in perfmon to identify CPU, Memory, IO Pressure

    2. When creating security logins how would you utilise active directory to reduce the number of SQL logins.

    3. When setting up a windows servers that will be used for SQL Failover Clustering what drive configuration can you recommend for conditions X, Y, Z

    5. What HDD configurations would you recommend for a database which is X gig in Size, i.e. SAN \ local storage etc.

Whereas small companies could ask anything

MCITP SQL 2005, MCSA SQL 2012

  • Thanks alot Taylor...

A was expecting such questions.. thanks once again..
