windows updates

  • Do you often run windows updates on SQL server, is it necessary if a sql box used internally?

And is it often run DBA or network engineer?

Any advice on running windows updates, in case there is a failure?

    Thanks

  • My experience is that it is typically managed by members of the Network Administration Team and/or the DBA(s).

It is ncessary to run if it is an internal box.

You want to keep up to date with SP's and patches and be prepared.

WSUS and the Security Analyzer are two tools that can be used.

You want to run the updates before there is an issue.

  • I have been in environments where it has been both ways. It works to have either the net admins or the DBAs do that task.

We liked using WSUS in both cases though because we can test the update and then deploy on our schedule as well as approve or disapprove of updates. Much better than using just windows update.

  • Is WSUS a tool needed to install on the server that need to be updated?

or where should I install the tool?

  • WSUS is a tool available for download. Updates to WSUS are far less frequent than other Microsoft products.

  • Thanks,

I mean is this tool needed to be install on the machine that needs to do the windows update?

Or can you briefly explain how this tool works, comparing with that I go to control panel of the server, click the windows upate.

  • This tool is generally downloaded to a central server. Then this tool deploys the updates to the other servers. You would typically set up a schedule to do the deployments and it would be automatic for the updates that you approve.

  • If you work with an MCSE and they have the book for 70-292 there is a lot of information on WSUS.

There were a ton of questions concerning SUS (WSUS) for 70-292.

    Same applies in Windows 2008.
