Wierd Icon in the registered SQL Server Connection in Management Studio

  • Normally in your Object Explorer in SSMS you get a yellow cylinder with a white 'Play' icon encased within a green circle. All of a sudden on one of our servers today I have this Icon as normal, but next to it (on the left) the is a new icon which looks like a little white script icon with a red X. Similar to the SSIS 'Script Task' icon that you get in the Control Flow Toolbox bit with a red x instead of an arrow???

Anyone seen this before? Its baffled me as everything appears to be working as normal.

  • sounds like a policy management alert. Some configuration of your server has changed that is not conforming to a policy that was set up.

The probability of survival is inversely proportional to the angle of arrival.

  • I'm not using policy manager anywhere in our estate. But I will check

  • yep this was indeed Policy Based Management. This is a test server and one of my team had enabled it to have a play. Disabling it removed the icon and proved it. However I could not find what the actual problem with the PBM was that was causing a RED X

Thanks a lot! At least I know what it is now 🙂
