Why would I be getting an unexpected "Stop request from Service Control Manager"?

  • I working on a server running a small town's billing software program (Pelorus). Just recently the Polaris SQL server started shutting down about 3:00 am each morning. I checked in the log and found the message:

2009-03-27 03:00:27.92 spid4s SQL Server is terminating in response to a 'stop' request from Service Control Manager. This is an informational message only. No user action is required.

Are there any typical reasons why the Service Control Manager would be sending a "Stop Request"?

The computer is running XP Professional with SP3. I noticed that the "stop" message comes nearly at the same time the computer is set up to automatically install MS OS updates. I have changed the computer not to automatically install updates. I suppose tomorrow morning I will see if this had any effect, but I thought I would ask my question now so that I won't lose a day in case someone knows that the update time has nothing to do with this problem. The fact that the server has been stopping just recently even though the "automatic updates" setting has been set the same for months makes me think changing the setting won't have any effect.

  • Wouldn't surprise me if you're on the right track on that one. It may be trying to update SQL Server and either failing, or not restarting it.

  • Thank for your response. Yes, I went on to discover that SQL Express service pack 3 was trying to install and failing each morning at 3:00:26. I love it when there is a clear explanation for a computer's behavior. I suppose there always is, but discovering it is another thing 🙂 .

  • I would say there's always a precise reason for a computer to fail, but not always a clear one. 🙂

Glad you found the cause. Were you able to solve it? Get the service pack installed?
