I know that VIA is not supported anymore but I can't find good sources to explain what was its use in SQL Server previous versions. Can anyone explain what was its meaning and, if any, provide good sources for future read.

The VIA protocol was supported on specialized hardware (such as network cards) that were used to communicate with SANs that also supported it. This protocol supported high performance, clustering, and load-balancing on dedicated network connections.
It was seldom used because of high cost, limited availability, and lack of vendor support. This led Microsoft to eventually drop support.
