Hi my problem is that with SSMSE 2008 I cannot for some reason manage the SQL REMOTE
servers (versions 2000, 2005 and 2008)
1. It seems that remote connections are allowed on all SQL remote servers I use because
connection formation as such works.
- All goes normally up to the point of trying to expand the Database node in Object Explorer details.
- Then comes the exception that I cannot get rid of (which says "The server principal
able to access the database
- So, I cannot expand the Database node to list down the Databases the server concerned has. This then
prevents me from getting in touch with my databases and their objects.
2. Interestingly, by right-clicking any opened server ip node (the first node of Object Explorer) and then
selecting New Query made possible to basic-query databases (of all 3 versions of SQL remote server)
normally.
3. The only problem is that I am not allowed to open the contents of Database node - i.e, to see
the actual databases and have access to them via the tree-interface of Object Explorer. And this is irrespective
of the fact that the nodes (Database, Security, Replication, etc.) gets loaded into the Object Explorer. But when
I when click the Database node in trying to open it the exception comes. What is the cause of the exception?
4. In SSMSE with my knowledge I can only find out that when the connection is open to the database then
in in the first node of the Object Explorer there reads:
"server ip(SQL Server 10.0.2531) - username"
and the username is the username with which I logged in (with SQL Server Autentication).
5. Through the Server Explorer of Visual Studio 2008 I can in addition to find out that, for example,
for one of my SQL 2008 Databases the table schemas are all in format of dbo - Does this really
matters in the problem?
What is the solution for the problem of SSMSE not allowing me to view and manage the actual
database objects in Object Explorer?

SSMSE is only designed to manage SQL Express databases. It's not designed for use with any other type of server. That might be why it's not doing what you need.

Thank you for you reply!
It has anyhow been said already in some other forum that SSMES 2008 should be able to manage also remote sql servers not only Express version!

Here's what Microsoft has to say on the subject: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms365247.aspx
The question is, why would you use Express for full-version servers?

...because I don't have SSMS and I have been informed that SSMSE does the basic operations!

If you have any edition of SQL Server, you have a pretty much unlimited license to install SSMS on workstations. Whatever installation media you installed SQL Server with has SSMS on it, and you can use that.
If the people you work for don't have installation media, that probably means pirate SQL installations. Not necessarily, but I'd be suspicious of it.

... It is just question of the remote sql servers provided by the web hoster as part of their package. I am trying to manage through SSMSE.

It sounds like a security issue from your description. I would contact your web hoster with the issue.

...Thank you for your assessment of the problem. I will turn to the web hoster!

There's a security option that blocks accounts from being able to select server objects. If they have that active, you won't be able to see the objects in SSMS or SSMSE, because that's how it gets them.

I received also the following response from GSquared:
"There's a security option that blocks accounts from being able to select server objects. If they have that active, you won't be able
to see the objects in SSMS or >SSMSE, because that's how it gets them."
For GSquared, thanks a lot for the information!!!
And For Steve, I will certainly let you now all I will know about how the problem will be solved!
Thanks for your time and experience,
Matti
