HI i downloaded express edition of 2005 and installed it on my laptop... I cant find none of the tools to use the database. All i see is the SQLServer(SQLExpress) service running.
I learnt SSMS is not included with the setup, instead SSMS-EE. But i cant find that as well, not even on net for downloads.
Any Help!!
All i want is to install the free version of 2005 and test it.. Any other versions/installation will also be helpful.
Thanks.

Here is the install path on my machine (Note I also have SQL 2000 installed). What you are looking for is: ssmsee.exe
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\ssmsee.exe"

i installed the 53 MB Express edition.. I dont see the VSShell folder under BINN folder.. also searched for ssmsee.exe on my hard drives... didnt find it..
I had also installed .NET 2.0 before installation.
There was just one installation file and was smooth till end without any error or warning.
I'm downloading the full evaluation version but seems it'd take another 15 hours or so on my datacard....
I want to download the complete free version... Any link to download other free version? i cant find one... tried finding ssmsee.exe on net but of no help..

you need to find the SQL Server Express 2005 with Advanced Services:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services
that contains the Express version of SS management Studio

Thanks Lowell. I was just wondering how much they've squeezed to make an express edition in just 50 MB where as enterprise one takes more than 800 MB.
This one has a size of around 250 MB.
I'd take atleast 4 more hours... I'll let u know upon installation.

PS
Another option for you is to install the Developer version of SQL 2005. The last time I looked it was available on AMAZON.COM for a price of $48.89 (U.S. dollars) or the developer edition of SQL 2008 same site same price. It comes on a CD and for just a modest additional cost you can have it delivered in 2 days. The license requires you to NOT use in a Production set up. The developer edition gives you so much more than the express I believe it to worth the $$.

yeah i carry the advanced version on a flash drive now that I've downloaded it;
i had a problem with VS 2005 installing; It would only install if i explicitly skipped allowing it to install SQL Express, so then i went thru the same steps you did...installed express, found there was no interface, and had to upgrade.
At least now i know what i was missing.
As bitbucket suggested, later i ponied up a few bucks for the Developer version, so now I can play with ssis and analysis services

Thanks Lowell and bitbucket.
Finally i got it working. Everything is in place now, including sample databases 🙂
Though i have msde, standard and enterprise of 2000; and msde, enterprise of 2005 at my workplace, i wanted to have something on my machine to keep myself busy during weekends.
and that $50 or so is a good bargain as i'll have near enterprise edition version on my desktop 🙂
