What tool or tools do people like for monitoring SQL servers?

  • I have a few tools at my disposal but none of them seems like it really rounds out what I am looking for in monitoring.  I would like to find a free or cheap way to monitor several SQL standalone servers and AAG's.  We have SCOM in our environment and a few other tools.  I would like a way to see things that are important like if the AAG's are running on the correct nodes, if they had a recent backup, if the databases are healthy, etc.  I would also like to monitor VLF's if I could as well as long running or expensive queries but those are not a must have per se.  I would also like to see what's running on all the servers if possible. If there's a paid solution that people really like, I would be interested in hearing about that as well.  The majority of servers are Windows Server 2022 with SQL Server 2022 and I have a variety of standard and enterprise installations.

  • Hi ,

It sounds like a enterprise grade monitoring ;so you need a mature monitoring system like SQL diagnostic manager or Solarwinds. I will not suggest a hand written scripts for monitoring the enterprise systems.

    Thanks,
    Abhinav

  • I created DBA Dash - a free and open-source monitoring tool for SQL Server.  It does everything you asked for and more.
