Hi,
I was wondering if anyone out there has any guidance on this. Basically we want to build a web application and it has to read/write data to a back end database which would be built in SQLServer2000 or perhaps 2005.
Web server would be in the DMZ, back end would be in the private zone.
My question is what would the licencing requirements be for the back end database ? Can I use anonymous log ins from the web server to cut down on licence costs ?
Regards,

In most cases, if the database server is accessible from the web, you'll need processor licenses.
MS has lots of advice for licensing:

If it's accessible from the web you'll most definitely want per processor. The scenario you've described is called "multiplexing" (see http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/multiplexing.mspx) and pretty much every database vendor disallows this particular method of avoiding/limiting licensing costs.
