Upgrade Question

  • Looking to upgrade from sql 2012 to 2016

    Q. Would there be any possible to find out before hand if any datatype issues is noticed like won't work after the upgrade or deprecated in 2016? Based on looking into this, I would think there is not a way to find beforehand. That's one of the reason upgrade would be implemented in DEV  and test to identify problems like this and fix them. Do you have any other suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!

  • There's a utility from Microsoft called the SQL Server 2016 Upgrade Advisor.  I'm not sure how you get hold of it now that SQL Server 2016 is no longer the most recent version, but it must be out there somewhere.  Alternatively, is there any reason not to upgrade to SQL Server 2017?

  • The Upgrade Advisor that John mentions is now called Data Migration Assistant. You can download the latest version from this link - the details list the supported versions and 2012 to 2016 is supported:

    Microsoft Data Migration Assistant v4.5
