I tried to use my developer edition SQL Server 2008 managment studio to connect a 2012 SQL server instance . When open tables, I got an error:
Indext was outside the bounds of the array.
I searched and found this is because there is no back level compatibility for the managment studio. needs to intall the new version 2012 management studio.
So I tried to upgrade the management studio to new version on my workstation developer edition.
But on the screen for choosing upgrade the shared features, I don't have an option to select only management studio, it says:
It Is Not Possible To Change The SQL Server Features To Be Upgraded In This Release
But since most of enviroment are still 2008, so I don't want to upgrade BIDS and others, but just want to ugprade the management studio,
Is there a way to do that?
or any other recommendations?
THanks

Have you tried launching a new install of 2012, but only choose the Client Tools?

Yep, do that. Management Studio for 2008 & 2012 are separate applications - you run them side by side rather than upgrade 2008 to 2012. Same goes for BIDS.
