Upgrade from SQL 2005 Standard to 2008 R2 or Enterprise

  • Hello,

I am running SQL 2005 Standard SP2 and would like to upgrade to SQL 2008 R2. The articles that I have read are giving mixed information. One article says that I can only upgrade to SQL 2008 Standard, but another article says that I can upgrade to 2008 Enterprise. Can someone verify which versions I can upgrade to?

    Thanks

  • You could upgrade to either one (including 2008 R2 Standard or 2008 R2 Enterprise).

However, you might consider that Mainstream Support for 2008 R2 will end 2014/07/08 which is just slightly over half a year from now...

    SQL2012 might be an alternative.

The biggest question behind that would be: do you run any of your databases on your 2K5 system under 2000 compatiblity mode (80)?

If so, an upgrade to 2012 could involve quite some work since comp mode 80 is no longer supported in SQL 2012...
