Upgrade from 2005 32-bit to 2008 R2 64-bit

  • Is there a way to do an in place upgrade from the 32-bit 2005 version to the 64-bit 2008 R2 version?

  • If the OS is 64-bit, then simply upgrading should do it. Test on a dev/test copy of the server first.

  • The problem is I keep getting the "Upgrade architecture mismatch" failed during the upgrade Pre-check.

Do I need to upgrade to 2005 64-bit first, then go to 2008?

Guess I need a temporary test server:-).

  • Yep. Test server is the way to go.

  • We had the same dilemma - going from SQL Server 2005 32-bit to SQL Server 2008 64-bit. We found it easiest to do it in steps:

    • Upgrade OS to Windows 2008 R2 64-bit (in some cases we did rebuilds)
    • At the same time upgrade SQL Server to SQL Server 2005 64-bit (or if a rebuild reinstall and restore backups)
    • Upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2 64-bit

We had to do this across 9 servers (development through production) so it was easiest to break it into smaller manageable pieces. This also assisted with simplifying the troubleshooting in case anything went wrong.

  • Were you able to Upgrade from 2005 32-bit to 64-bit? Or did you have to un-install/Re-install?
