Is there a way to do an in place upgrade from the 32-bit 2005 version to the 64-bit 2008 R2 version?

If the OS is 64-bit, then simply upgrading should do it. Test on a dev/test copy of the server first.

The problem is I keep getting the "Upgrade architecture mismatch" failed during the upgrade Pre-check.
Do I need to upgrade to 2005 64-bit first, then go to 2008?
Guess I need a temporary test server:-).

Yep. Test server is the way to go.

We had the same dilemma - going from SQL Server 2005 32-bit to SQL Server 2008 64-bit. We found it easiest to do it in steps:
We had to do this across 9 servers (development through production) so it was easiest to break it into smaller manageable pieces. This also assisted with simplifying the troubleshooting in case anything went wrong.

Were you able to Upgrade from 2005 32-bit to 64-bit? Or did you have to un-install/Re-install?
