Hi.
I work mainly from my home. I have four boxes, one of which is a real server with RAID etc.; the others are standard PCs. My main squeeze(box) had SQL Server Developer version installed and one day it died. I have no idea what caused its sudden demise. It had SQL 2000 and Yukon installed on it.
I tried uninstalling both, and both uninstalls failed. I tried re-installing and both failed. I tried booting in Safe mode (WXP) and renaming the old directory and starting over. That failed too.
I have so much stuff installed on my main squeeze that the thought of reformatting and starting over is stomach-turning (two 80GB drives)!
The data directory was fine so I moved the files to the server and ran sp_attach_single_db and successfully got those databases running, but I don't like to use my server for strictly experimental work; it's there for production work.
I can't uninstall; I can't re-install; I can't delete the directory. After an attempted re-install I keep getting busted with a "SQL_HANDLE_ENV" error. The exact text is:
[Microsoft] ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLAllocHandle on SQL_HANDLE_ENV failed.
Does anyone have any suggestions less violent than reformatting and starting over?
TIA,
Arthur

For Yukon, I'm not sure. Have you tried uninstalling and then deleting the registry keys for SQL Server?
The other solution is for you to reinstall in a new folder and slowly reinstall apps, pointing them back to wherever they were first installed.

Below is the link to the KB Article which explains how to manually uninstall SQL server.

That article on performing a manual uninstall (above) is very informative. However, I tried one more thing before that. I applied the latest service pack to my installation of SQL Server. After the completion of the service pack install, I was able to successfully uninstall SQL Server from "Add/Remove Programs."
Before I applied the service pack, I was UNable to remove SQL Server. It gave me an error message saying that a log file in the uninstall directory was missing (paraphrased).
