Unable to login to SQL2000 database with SQL authentication

    What is the security option you have selected while creating linked servers?

    I haven't set up the linked server yet - I am so far just trying to create the login, to be used later on to map specific users in the linked server setup

    If you use both SQL 2000 and 2005 databases, why not use SSMS for all databases? I'm using it too for SQL 2000 (right now working on an upgrade from 2000 to 2008) and it works fine. If something doesn't work (for example the Job Activity Monitor) either use for that Enterprise Manager or any other workaround.
