Ugrade/migrate SSRS 2000 to SSRS 2008

  • Hello, I could use some help in resolving an issue with SSRS 2008. I am getting the following error when I try to restore the Encryption Key using the RS Configuration Manager that comes with 2008. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Here is what I am doing.

I currently have SSRS 2000 installed and am trying to upgrade and migrate it to SSRS 2008 on new machines (one for db and the other for the service). These are the steps I took. Both 2008 servers have 2008 and SP1 installed on them (version 10.0.2531.0). I took the following steps.

    backup up source SSRS dbs

    backup source encryption key

    backup source .config files

install SSRS 2008 on destination SSRS server with “Install but do not configure” option.

Setup RSExecRole role on destination DB server.

Restore dbs on destination server. This SHOULD UPGRADE dbs to 2008.

Copy over .config files to new server (all files but rsreportserver.config since I could not restart the service with it.)

Finish config using Config manager (URLs, restore DB, etc) and start SSRS Service.

Restore source encryption key on destination SSRS (service) server. – I get the error here.

I’ve used the following msdn documentation but have had no luck.

  • I am assuming you are missing SSRS 2000 SP2 which is required for upgrade to SSRS 2008 and you need these links instead of the ones you posted. Now I am not saying those are not relevant.

  • It sounds like this could be it. Since it's a production system I'll have to wait to apply SP2 but I'll post my results when I have done so. Thank you. Much appreciated.

  • I have helped with SSRS 2000 to SSRS 2005 upgrade and the main issue was upgrade from SSRS 2000 Standard comes with base restrictions which creates issues for the upgrade so you need to read the upgrade to 2005 docs very carefully so you will avoid what creates issues. You could also create a sandbox version from your production code so you could upgrade without affecting your production code. I have an existing thread I will post it later.

  • Hey, Any luck with this issue? I am having the same issue in restoring keys. Thanks in advance!
