  what would happen if both variables had been set to the same size (big enough to accept the long answer)?

  If both variables are set to the same size it will work fine. That would be the ideal case for using the function. It simply takes the variable, and sets it equal to the data in the second variable. If they are both the same size, there will be no issues.
