transitioning sql 2000 to new server

  • hello - we're moving sql 2000 to a new machine and want to use the same license on the new machine that is installed on the machine that we're decommissioning.  in the past it seemed that when you installed the same license on 2 machines the newest installation would only allow one connection - indicating that microsoft checks if 2 machines that are communicating are using the same license and disables the newest one.

can someone confirm if this is the case - and what is the correct procedure?

  • SQL Server 2000 doesn't do any sort of "phone home" and I haven't run into this problem myself, even when transitioning servers like you are trying to do. In the past, did the problem go away when you powered off the first machine?
