  • This reads too much like whistling past the graveyard. I suspect that we comfort ourselves with the thought that others may lose their jobs, but the "I'm too smart and too high up the job chain for it to affect me, I can work WITH them" pacifier rings hollow these days. Sure that scenario might last for a few minutes longer, but if you are a business cost and that cost can eventually be reduced by AI/robotics then that small comfort will disappear fast. .

    Too gloomy? Yeah, I'm probably guilty of that. But I suspect that over the next decade, your piece might read as hubris.

  • I completely think there is a possibility that a number of engineers will lose their jobs. If you can't guide an llm, if you aren't smarter than it and get worse (meaning slow/expensive) results from an LLM, you are likely do go. If the AI isn't a lever for your job, you will lose your job at some point.

    Might take years. Lots of robots have been slow to succeed without good mentors.

    However, my concerns are on simpler domains. Building software is not simple. Changing oil is. Replacing electrical sockets are. Mopping floors and stocking shelves, shopping for users who put in online orders and packaging this into bags. That's within the realm of the robots this year.

  • "The robot will improve its capabilities, and much faster than a human can." At this point, are robots performing self-improvement, or is that still done by human engineers?

    And as far as a robotic grease monkey goes, it wouldn't need to look-up the socket size. I would think it would be able to eyeball that on the fly much better than a human. But what happens when it falls over in the pit? Will you need two robots, one for the pit and one topside?

    I can see many robots being tripped by their human coworkers.

  • Changing oil is easy--maybe. Have you watched any videos on YouTube how mechanics and engineers hate one another with regard to oil changes?

    Replacing electrical sockets are easy? When was the last time you changed one? I'm thinking about the dexterity required when you are dealing with wires that are short. Or the yoga one must practice to replace a receptacle under the kitchen sink?

    The amazing thing is that not all robots need to be human shaped. They could have 2 (or 3) hands on an arm and fix those short wires. I replaced a switch (same principle) last month. There was plenty of extra wire stuffed in there. The hardest part was stuffing it back in there.

    But think about that from an AI perspective. That's the scary thing about these models and images. They can work out there is extra wire, and figure out how to stuff it in there, just like a human. The hardest part now with using robots for home repair is transporting them there.

    However, imagine Amazon using robots to maintains stuff in warehouses, or offices. More standard, always have an amount of extra wire. It's truly scary to think about the places where this stuff could replace humans.

    As for toppling, robots are better and better about getting themselves back up. They can do a lot of work we can do now. They will get better.

    The bigger question is whether it will be cost effective, and whether we create any limits on their use (safety, economic, etc.). This isn't be be dystopican, but realistic. It could go either way
