The Job Outlook for Database Professionals

  • Great article Steve!

I've noticed myself that a lot of my friends are struggling to find jobs, but data seems to be a still booming field. The AI tech I've seen for databases so far leaves a lot to be desired so I am currently not too worried about that.

  • I'm not worried about AI, but I do think it's a tool that I need to learn more about how to use effectively.

  • I'm quietly optimistic in the data space.

Regardless of the technology of the day the nature of business is that it relies on communication.  Whether that is talking to customers and suppliers or co-ordinating internal activity.  Part of that communication is data.  Data/Information needs to move from where it is collected to where it can be usefully consumed.  It always has done, it always will do.

Things change.  After all, if it works it is obsolete.  That means that we don't just move data we have to transform data so the old and the new can still talk to each other effectively.

If you've been in this game long enough you will have seen some extremely bizarre architectural and technology choices.  These too provide some interesting challenges for data professionals.  I'm trying not to hold the mental image of the Mythbusters building an actual lead balloon.  One of my friends said "anyone can make a mistake but do we have to shoot ourselves in both feet"?

GenAI isn't magic, it is dependent on the quality of data and information that is fed into it.  That either dooms it, or gives us a powerful lever to address perennial data quality problems.  Either way data professionals have work to do.

The cost of running Agentic AI is sky high, which is an improvement on stratospheric.  It is still too expensive to allow it to run unfettered.  There is a lot of work to make data and metadata available in a way that Agentic AI can use and use efficiently.  Again, more DBA and data engineer work.

For me the thing that keeps me awake at night is the task of making sure that I am still perceived as relevant.  Once you get beyond a certain age people assume you are past it.  One day I will be, but not just yet!

  • I tend to agree, AI isn't going to kill us, but it is going to change things. I expect AgenticAI to run in limited circumstances where it saves people time, and I can see this as something we implement in IT systems more than customer facing ones.

However, if you don't improve your skills, you may be one of those left out of future prospects.
