...this is a timely reminder that ... it does NOT relieve the DBA from ensuring that the backups can actually be restored in an emergency...
As I believe that Jeff is suggesting, this is only achievable if you know where to locate the backup, can access the backup and that it will restore AND you only know this if you have performed each step at least once since any change that can affect any of these steps.
