The comment board ate my first comment
I had an aside about why you chose to mention mySQL instead of MariaDB
I didn’t know if it was for technical reasons or just a placeholder for that type of database for which my concerns are more about the owner rather than the technology
I often forget I’m doing all this work because I am on a team, but I’m supporting a dying tree of first year DBA tasks as we end our almost 8 year migration from a legacy platform to our current offering
I really enjoy the work I do and could care less if I had the situation you had or not because at least we’re a half a year or so if somebody asked me to do any work, I would be grateful with for the opportunity
I’m glad your soft skills are so in demand
my favorite soft skills question?
asking the requestor when they want an update on the request that they made
the response to that is often the most important thing they say in the entire interaction

WOW. This was written as if the author worked where I do... LOL.
I love the analogy about SQL and Cantonese vs Mandarin; every time we discuss projects and resources, I get "couldn't employee A help with this"? Sure... just because you are in IT does not mean you know everything. Ok, let me stop my programming for a moment to hop onto the network router and analyze the packages...
Years ago we may have been able to be generalist, but technology is moving at such a fast pace I do not believe that is possible anymore. Never mind the unrealistic belief that major project can be done in a few hours or a week on top of existing responsibilites...
Argue for your limitations, and sure enough they're yours (Richard Bach, Illusions)
