The BI Year

  • 2006 was an important year for BI. In January 2006 BI was rated #1 on the hit parade of CIO Priorities by Gartner Group in their annual CIO survey. And it was an important year for BI on the Microsoft platform, with the late 2005 release of SQL Server 2005 and the ProClarity acquisition in May.

2006 was a year of BI research, planning, and budgeting for many companies.

What I expect for 2007 (and what we are experiencing) is a real "surge" of companies now ready to really begin BI projects, complete with budget to support them.

And I think that 2008 will bring even more of the same.

As for BI being too complex for many people, a lot of that has to do with what tools are available to make BI more approachable, less intimidating, and more comprehensible for both IT and for non-technical end users as well. Some of that has to do with the tools available for IT people such as the new Designers and Wizards in Analysis Services. And a lot has to with tools available for end users, like....ours, for example.
