Target & Total Server Memory Performance

    In one of my MSSQL server database performance monitoring, I noticed its Total Server Memory value consistantly less than 1/8 of its Target Server Memory. How will the difference in these two counter values affect the database performance ? At one time, when the number of users in that database jumped 4 fold, tables in the database cannot be updated, the server had to be reboot.

    Total is what it's using, Target is what it wants. If this is different, then there will be more swapping to disk and performance can be affected. It could appear to hang the server when it's actually running slow.
