That's also a useful technique when you don't get a match on a string and need to examine each byte string, including the ASCII or UNICODE value of it. I've used an inline tally function for it, but now that MS actually added a number generator, it's definitely worth testing.
Come to think of it, how long ago was it that Erland created that original Connect item? Not even the Connect system is around anymore. 😉
