Ellsbury deserved the AL MVP (bias much?).

Verlander is just a pitcher, they have their own awards

FWIW, if I was going to claim bias, I'd say Curtis Granderson should've been AL MVP. 😉

For people who say Verlander (or any starting pitcher who only pitches every fifth day) doesn't deserve MVP, I offer this thought. Verlander won 26 games. Let's say an average pitcher wins ten games. That's 16 extra wins that he gives Detroit. In a pennant race, that could be a very big deal.

    Just my $20.00 (inflation :-))!

Let's put this another way: If a team has all five starters winning at a Verlander clip of 26 times, they finish the season 130 W, 32 L. I'm sure there are other angles to this as well. The MVP should be a guy who's obviously head and shoulders above most of his peers. He's going to be a game-changer (think of Barry Bonds inspiring manager Buck Showalter to walk him WITH THE BAGS FULL to prevent a possible slam). Verlander did that all season, keeping batters (rarely hitters when facing him) off their game. Most importantly, he provided the core of what his team needed for sucess. If a pitcher does that, then sure, he's the MVP. And if a pitcher's the MVP, then I guess it's just about automatic that he's got the Cy Young as well. That's one reason to announce the awards in the order that they do.

  • Wow, the Hot Stove has been busy! To wit . . .

    • Albert Pujols to the Angels
    • Jose Reyes and Mark Buhrle to the Marlins
    • Bobby Valentine to the Red Sox
    • Dale Svuem to the Cubs
    • Of course, this is old news, but -- Theo Epstein to the Cubs

    Have I missed anything?

    And we're not done yet!

  • Heath Bell to the Marlins...and it looks like C.J. Wilson is going to the Angels with Pujols....

  • The Dodgers officially signed starter Aaron Harang to a two-year, $12MM deal with a vesting/mutual option for 2014.

The Tigers reached an agreement with reliever Octavio Dotel on a one-year deal with an option

The Diamondbacks have agreed to terms with first baseman Lyle Overbay on a one-year deal worth $1MM

The Padres found their Heath Bell replacement, acquiring closer Huston Street from the division-rival Rockies for a player to be named later. The Rockies have officially announced the trade. The Rockies are eating $1MM on Street's $8MM salary

  • 10 years 250 million .... that's a-rod money.

David Ortiz accepted arbitration and will be with Boston for at least another year (2)

    250 million ... geez

  • They're also saying that Yu Darvish is going to post.

Supposedly, the Texas Rangers are considered to be the frontrunners for him, but let's see what happens with the posting process.

Those of you who didn't see him pitch in the WBC are in for a treat, assuming he doesn't succumb to the Japanese third-year pitcher syndrome.

  • Good for Pujols. I heard the Angels owner say they expected him to bring in about half a billion over the next ten years with revenue changes and promotions. Plus, he has a chance for the HR record. Not a great one, but an outside chance. Even if not, he'll be a 600+ HR guy and can go on tour as a DH.

    I like it.

Good for the Cards as well. I think spending $200mm would be bad for them, especially not being a premium market and they'll still have a great team next year.

Rockies moved Street, we'll see if it helps. Not hopeful.

Yeah, I was just reading about Yu Darvish. He plays for the Nippon Ham Eaters, right? His club posted him so he's available.

Prince Fielder is a free agent because the Brewers thought they had Ryan Braun. Now that Braun is facing a 50 game suspension for doping violations, they might be paying a premium to keep Fielder. Tough spot they're in.

  • Aramis Ramirez will sign a three-year contract with the Brewers, reports Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports expects the contract to be in the $34-37MM range. With first baseman Prince Fielder expected to leave via free agency and MVP Ryan Braun facing a potential 50-game suspension for a banned substance, the Brewers were motivated to add a middle-of-the-order bat.

The Brewers announced the signing of shortstop Alex Gonzalez today. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports first tweeted news of the agreement last week, noting that it's a one-year deal with a vesting option for 2013. Gonzalez will take over as Milwaukee's starting shortstop, a position occupied by Yuniesky Betancourt this year.

  • We got movement!

Boston signs Nick Punto to a three year deal to play SS after trading away Lowrie and Weiland for Mark Melancon (closer from houston).

Good decision getting rid of Lowrie. Poor Weiland. Isn't he the rookie who started 7 games, 3 in september, and got ejected in his first outing? lol

They also signed a catcher, Shoppach from the Rays. /sigh. Why would you sign a lameo catcher like Shoppach and leave a gem like Varitek unsigned. Shoppach doesn't hit any better than Varitek and knows nothing about Boston's pitching!

Yanks posted a bid for Yu Darvish.

Only 4 more months until spring training!

Not nearly so long.... pitchers and catchers report as early as 2/18, depending on the team. See http://springtrainingonline.com/features/reporting-dates.htm
