Talking baseball

  • I came across this article by ESPN that attempts to define the signature moment that defined each season since 1903.  I don't necessarily agree with the list, but I thought it was interesting that they made the attempt.

Anyway, I figured my fellow baseball fans would find this interesting!

  • Interesting list. I don't necessarily know what I'd pick for the categories, but I do have some great memories of things I saw live on TV (if that's a thing)

1977 - 3 HRs by Mr. Jackson in October
1988 - Gibson HR, almost messed up my hitting on a girl when I saw this end the game. Fortunately the bar celebrated and she forgave my paying attention to the game.
    1998 - McGwire hits #62
    1999: Cone's perfect game
2001: Bonds. Not hitting 73, but in the first or second series of the year, someone throwing him like 14 balls in a row (3 walks) and then letting one get close and him knocking it out of the park. After standing there all day, he was still focused enough to put one out.
    2001: Jeter becoming Mr November
2003: Saw the Bartman  incident with a Cubs fan. Man, was he upset
    2004: F**king Red Sox.
2007: World Series and great run by the Rockies to get there. Took my kid to game 3.

  • 1984: ... the White Sox and Brewers played 25 innings

How trivial -- I would say that the Tigers 35-5 start and World Series championship (4th in team history 35, 45, 68 & 84) was a little more definitive and important

  • Well, the Hall of Fame voting results come out tomorrow!

For discussion: who gets in this year?  (For reference purposes, here's one man's list of the best career moment for each player on the ballot.)

  • Bonds needs to get in. It's petty to keep in out.

Not sure how I feel about Bonds.  I'll admit that I didn't like the guy, but I won't argue with his stats.

I do think, however, that it's an absolute crime that Edgar Martinez still isn't in.  Hopefully he gets in next year.

Other than that cheating thing.  Put him in posthumously if you must.

I get it. He certainly did something. No tests failed, nothing proven, and if it were just him, I'd be with you. However, there's a huge crowd from that time, and we really have no idea how many cheated and didn't excel to HoF levels, but helped others. Or who cheated and did impress us.

All I can say is he was a HoF candidate when he went to SF with a much smaller hat size.

And I watched him take 15 balls in a row before hitting an HR in a game. He's a part of history and a HoF, or if you like, HoinF.

Forgetting the "clear" and the "cream" and the whole BALCO scandal and having someone go to jail for a year to cover up for him -- put Bonds in after he's dead.  Don't give him any satisfaction -- same thing applies doubly to Pete Rose.

Granted both Bonds and Rose being jerks colors my opinion.

    Just my $..02

  • I thought this was an interesting read: What's behind the decline and fall of the stolen base?

    Good question, ESPN.

  • Interesting. It's an exciting play, but I think it's a low percentage one most of the time. I suspect analytics when I saw the link.

  • I think stolen bases are still relevant.  Not everyone has Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Gary Sanchez hitting behind them (and even then, they're not always going to get a hold of one), so there's no guarantee that the big bopper will be there to drive them home.  I'm a believer that the ability to manufacture runs is still important.

  • To me the stolen base is more exciting than a Home Run.
