system requirements for 120GB+ database

  • Hi,

We’re looking to get a new machine to store about 120G+ of data as both Relational and Olap. Unfortunately, we don’t have any data profiling info or idea of user base at this point, but need to push forward with purchasing hardware.

What would be your recommendation for cpu/memory/disk?

What do you think of a 64-bit dual core, 8G memory machine with let’s say 3 disks (15K, 10K and 7K)?

i am new to this forum so would appreciate any insight you can share:)

  • You need to get that info first or you'll most likely have to rebuy a server after the initial one... or you'll overshoot the needs of the client and buy them a much bigger bgox than what they need.

  • You need to get the remaining information to take an accurate guess at hardware needs. Convincing someone of this can typically be easy. Price out something that could not possibly be too small - say an 8 processor 64 bit system with 128gb of memory (good to have more memory than data?). When they are stunned at the price, tell them you could probably come up with something a bit smaller if you had all of the correct information.

Hey - you have 120gb of relational data and you plan on putting this, some OLAP equivalent (which will never be the same size), and probably your ETL processes on the same server - this is all stuff that typically requires completely different hardware profiles. Sometimes you can accomodate this on a single server, but you should price it out broken up as well - you may find it much less expensive on two or three servers.

  • Don't forget to add a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and nth almost equally expensive server for Dev, QA, Testing and backup server(s). That may let them let you take a day or 2 to figure out the best settings for all ;).

  • Might also be a good time to ask for a laptop while you're at it :hehe:.

  • If you ask for $250k in hardware and they jusy say "ok", please let me know and I will send you my resume.

  • Just send the CEO your resume and say you can cut off that price by at least 20%... Hired ;).
