My question is rather a general one and i appreciate there will be a difference in the answers depending on peoples environments.
My questions is "How long should you keep your system database backups if you are backing them up once a week ?"
On our servers we are keeping them for a 5 month period - i think this is too much as if there was a failure of the master database surely we would just use the most recent backup. Im thinking of changing the retention to just 4 weeks and saving some disc space !!

How often do you ever need to restore from system database backups? If the answer is "not very", I'd only keep the two most recent... provided, of course, that they were being backed up to tape before being deleted.

I've tended to keep 2-3, similar to what I do for user databases. These rarely change, so you could argue you need less backups, like 1/week, but since they're small, I tend to just back them up every night.
