Can this be automated so that we can use this to keep a mirror copy of a database up to date?

Yes, synchronisation scripts can be saved and then embedded in a SQL job to be run at regular intervals.
The last step in the synchronisation wizard prompts you either to synchronise now or save the script for a later use. Simply save the script and then use it in a SQL Agent job.
