Hi, i have been looking on the web for an answer but am coming up short. Im stumped
Im using an image i broke out from a word doc after saving it as html. Im using it as a background for my new report. The report will actually be a letter to certain customers whose content is based on some sql query results. Basically the image looks like a very light gray watermark of the globe with our slogan left of that. i also have our logo inserted as an image upper left.
my body measures are 8 width by 10.5 height. same with my report's and interactive sizes. all margins are .25. both the body and report have a border of 1 pt. the report "property page" shows portrait and the same measures i just mentioned.
even before i run the report, i see what appears to be too much report. Its as if my report dimensions are being ignored. I dont see any handles on the report region that i can use to squeeze it down. when i run, i see the same thing. the report appears to be generating much wider than 8.5 inches.
when i remove the background image, same thing. I did save an existing very wide report to make this one before removing all the visuals. also when i reduce the body to 7.9 x 10.4 i get the same undesirable effect.
at rendering when i hit "print layout" it looks more reasonable. when i save to word once again i see a too wide report. without the watermark and slogan . when i save to pdf, i see a reasonable portrait report with watermark and slogan. but 3 extra pages.

Are you able to post images showing the Report Properties?

red shows background image. 2nd image is other properties pane of report that you get by rt clicking the report region.

rendering in ssrs still has that wide look with no border. hitting print layout in ssrs looks right. saving to pdf is much better now in that watermark is still there, and there are no additional pages. saving to word looks ridiculous in that its as wide as possible (what word allows without a slider bar) , and there is no background image. in word under layout if i click 8.5 x 11 im ignored i think. same with hitting portrait.

Can I ask why you have set a custom page size, instead of 8.5 x 11?
To make sure you avoid the blank page issue, you need to be sure that
Palette width + left margin + right margin <= page width
where 'palette width' is the width of your objects in the VS report designer. I can't remember whether it matters, but I always also make sure that there is no whitespace on the right hand side of the palette, by dragging the page so that it is flush with the right-most object (ie, by removing the yellow-shaded area in the image below).

thx phil i believe that custom setting was ssrs automatically setting it (the rt click on report) .
none of my objects is wider than the body but my textbox heights are set such that you cannot read the "value" anymore in designer. The most common font i have in those boxes is 10 Segoe UI, with a height of .15. i squeezed them to get the text boxes involved to seem closer at render time. i wonder if that's the culprit. the report's textbox spacings looks fine at render time.
