SSC Problem Report

  • Please assist for me for the following error.

After installing SQL Server 2000 in my workstation(client version) I am unable to connect to the server with the server name. But with IP address, i can connect. But all the other users of other workstations can connect with server name. Can anyone tell me where is the problem and what should i do to access the server with server name. I am having the Windows 2000 Professional installed at the client and connected to Windows 2003 server which is my domain.

    The error message is

    Unable to connect server xxxxxx:

    server :Msg17, Level 16, state 1

[Microsoft][ODBC SQLServer Driver][TCP/IP Sockets] SQL server does not exist or access denied.(UserID=219739)

  • I've seen this before and it usually points to a problem with DNS or with the client configuration.  You may want to check with your network guys although if other clients can connect, that's probably not the issue.

You can also try opening Clicfg.exe in your local C:\Windows\System32 folder and check the Alias tab to see if you have a bad reference to the server in there somewhere.  You may just want to delete the entry and recreate it if it's there or just leave it out completely and try again.  I have some applications here where the clients won't work properly if there's an alias listed there.

Are you on the same segment and subnet as the other clients that are working?

My hovercraft is full of eels.
