Hi Guys,
I am new to BI!! Please help me here.
I am using SQL 2005 Standard Ed, and I clearly remember that I have included all the components of SSAS, SSIS, SSRS while installing SQL 2005 on my standalone Vista laptop.
But when I open SQL Server Mgmt Studio, instances of SSAS, SSIS, SSRS are all missing, only the Database Engine instance available for me to connect.
The "Server Name" drop down box is available for Database Engine only.
Do you know why SSAS, SSIS, SSRS instances are all missing? Can I create or install them so that I can connect???
many thanks

You may have added SSIS and SSAS but not SSRS because SSRS require IIS7 installed and configured in IIS6 mode, so you need Vista Ultimate or Business to install IIS7 with Windows authentication and SSRS.

The SQL Server 2005 installer does not see IIS7 in Vista home premium as IIS because it comes without Windows authentication. So you either get Vista Ultimate or business or use SSRS 2008 as a work around solution with SQL Server 2005 relational engine. The first link is a very long but still not complete instructions to install SSRS 2005 in Vista Ultimate or Business and the second link the last comment comes with the SSRS 2008 solution.

thanks Gift,
do you think it is a good idea to totall un-install SQL 2005 and intall SQL 2008 instead??
I am happy to do that if it can solve the IIS7 issue.
Also, if IIS7 is the only issue, will that be easy just re-install and configure IIS7?
thanks

The short answer is yes because 2008 comes without IIS requirement however most if not all IIS depenedent features like response object are not available with SSRS 2008 deployment without IIS.

IIS is Windows component so version is Windows edition dependent so you need new operating systems to get IIS7 with Windows authentications.

thanks Gift, understand now..
With no intention to change my OS by now, I'd better install SQL 2008 instead.
Isn't it silly that Microsoft's infamous vista doesn't support SQL 2005 BI components!!

It supports SSAS and SSIS however SSRS 2005 comes with Windows authentication as a requirement so you need Vista Ultimate or Business.

No.. Vista Home Prem doesn't support SSAS nor SSIS.
Both service instances are missing.
When I open Mgmt Studio, Connect -> SSAS -> there is nothing to be connected to ...
