I wanted to ask the pros on this one; I want to work with SQL XML as well as HTML XHTML CSS like I do already. I have followed all of the W3C's tutorials on these two subjects but I wanted to know how much it takes to get a job in this field. For example, if a recruiter is asking for knowledge of SQL/XML how much could I stand to learn on the job or would I have to learn it all before (seems like there's a hell of a lot of information and courses are too expensive for me)?
Thanks

Obviously there is too much to even act like you know it all beforehand. Only a handful of the guru's on this site know enough that they rarely get stumped. Hence, everything is learning on the job.
With that said, be honest. Many companies already have one or two experts, but the workload is too great. You may offer expertise in another area that is important to them, hence the learning curve for SQL and XML may be worth their taking you on as an employee.
I have always spoken well of myself during interviews, but when I did not know something, I told them I could learn, but I did not know - it will be obvious if you say anything but that.
I am working on learning SQL Server Reporting Services - had a class. That's it. But they are looking at going that direction and you have to start somewhere. Maybe someday we will hire a Reporting Services expert, but for now, they are stuck with this knucklehead.
Just tell them you have "class" knowledge and they will understand. All of us had to start somewhere. It is the ambition to learn and get better that really matters. Think of it this way..., would you hire yourself? The answer is probably "Yes" - even with a learning curve.
I wasn't born stupid - I had to study.
