SQlserver :Memroy Manager counter

  • Hi all,

we added a igb Ram to our server which means we have total of 4 Gb ram on the server.

Before addition of this ram when I ran the SQLserver:Memory Manager :Total server Memory and Target Server Memory counters they were same.

But after addition of the additional Ram i see a big difference between these two counters.

The total server memory counter is way to less than the target server.

    totalservermemory(kb):278448.000

    targetservermemory(kb):1683552.000.

We have SQL server enterprise edition running on this server.

    It's a

    Pentium 3,4 cpu -550 mhz system with win2k .

Any inputs on this is highly appreciated.

    Thakns

  • Target server memory is the total amount of dynamic memory the server is willing to consume and total server memory is the total amount of dynamic memory the server is currently consuming.

  • Also, did you add the /3GB switch to the OS boot.ini to make the memory available to SQL? There are dozens of threads on this here and see BOL "Managing AWE Memory" and "Using AWE Memory on Windows 2000" for a bit on this.
