    Bug #: 434763 (SQLBUDT)

    SYMPTOMS

    <script type=text/javascript>loadTOCNode(1, 'symptoms');</script>

When you try to modify or reinstall the existing installation of SQL Server Native Client in Control Panel, a Windows Installer dialog box may appear. The dialog box reports that the source media that contains the required file is unavailable. The error message may resemble the following:

    Error message 1
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Additionally, you receive the following message in the Windows Installer dialog box together with a Use source box:

Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package ‘Sqlncli.msi’ in the box below.

If you locate the Sqlncli.msi file on the SQL Server 2005 installation media and then click OK, you receive the following error message:

    Error message 2
The file ‘Folder\sqlncli.msi’ is not a valid installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client. Try to find the installation package ‘sqlncli.msi’ in a folder from which you can install Microsoft SQL Server Native Client.

This problem may occur when all the following conditions are true:

You have Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed.
The Sqlncli.msi file that you specify in the Use source box is the version of the Sqlncli.msi file from the original release version of SQL Server 2005.

    CAUSE

    <script type=text/javascript>loadTOCNode(1, 'cause');</script>

You receive error message 1 because the cache files that are related to SQL Server Native Client on the computer are deleted or corrupted. These cache files are installed by SQL Server 2005 SP1 for future easy maintenance.

You receive error message 2 because the SQL Server Native Client you are trying to modify or reinstall is the SQL Server Native Client that is installed by SQL Server 2005 SP1. However, the SQL Server Native Client that you specify in the Use source box is the SQL Server Native Client from the original release version of SQL Server 2005.

    WORKAROUND

    <script type=text/javascript>loadTOCNode(1, 'workaround');</script>

To work around this problem, reinstall SQL Server 2005 SP1. During the installation of SQL Server 2005 SP1, only choose to install SQL Server Native Client and Setup Support Files in the Feature Selection dialog box.

    STATUS

    <script type=text/javascript>loadTOCNode(1, 'status');</script>

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
