SQLH2 - Access to the registry key is denied

  • Hello,

I am running SQLH2 version 2.02 and am trying to report on 18 servers; 10 are displying the following message:

    08/08/2006 15:39:00  Status:  Initializing Target: SQL5

    08/08/2006 15:39:00  Status:    registering Server

    08/08/2006 15:39:00  INFO:  srv_id = 7; signature = 2e105401-7e72-4fed-9522-0ea743f1c37f

    08/08/2006 15:39:00  Status:  Scanning Registry on SQL5

08/08/2006 15:39:02  ERROR:  Access to the registry key  is denied.

I followed the step-by-step installation guide and got over most of the problem but this one ... The server seems to register OK but then SQLH2 can not access the registry. I am running this through my SysAdmin Account and can register all servers in Enterprise Manager/Server Management Studio Any ideas?

    Many thanks!

  • A guess in the dark: Remote registry service disabled?

  • Thanks for the reply. Unfortunatley all Servers have this service started, using the local system account ...

    Any other ideas?? 🙁

  • You can't use the local system account as that account doesn't have any privelages for remote resources.

We have SQLH2 gathering info from a dozen or so servers, not all of them are running SQL Server. After running into numerous errors like the one you've encountered we just gave it Domain Admin and now it works flawlessly. You could probably assign less privelages to the account, but we couldn't find anything that detailed what privelages were required.

  • Phill is correct.

The fastest way to fix this problem is to grant domain admin. A large portion of what SQLH2 does is similar to what you would do if you were sitting in front of your workstation pointing and clicking away. We simply automate this for you. ;&gt -

So it is rationale and expected that to access the varied resources across machine boundaries you would need some higher privileges.

    Make sense?

  • Hi guys,

thanks for all the comments! V helpful!

    DOH!

A quick look at the Task Scheduler revealed the error of my ways - I changed the account to a domain admin priv account and hey presto - it worked., no errors.

Thanks again for all your help, really appreceated.
