SQL vs. FileMaker

  • I have a client that is currently using FileMaker to handle all of their business data. I want to convince them that they should migrate off to MS SQL. Can you all help me out by weighing in on what advantages you see SQL having over FileMaker (I am not that familiar with FileMaker)

    Thanks,

  • Havent used it either. Think it probably falls in the Access/file based db arena. Are they having problems with their current system that moving to SQL would fix?

  • Actually is this FileMaker app or FileMaker Server, if Server then moving to SQL may only cost them more if the solution has been working fine and they are not shelling out ofor a newer version. However, I have not had the opportunity to compare and found no direct comparisons done so I cannot tell you performance wise how they compare or client cost wise how.

  • Not familiar with Filemaker either, however As Antares mentioned, I think you need to weigh the upgrade costs (software, time, development) and see. IF Filemaker isn't performing and something needs to be done, then it's worth considering SQL. Otherwise, I'm not sure I'd recommend an upgrade.

  • My client also happens to be a friend of mine who asked me if I could bid on a database project for him which is currently in FileMaker...unfortunately I don’t really know FileMaker all that well...I do most of my db development in MSSQL. His company is a small business that is undergoing some rapid growth. If his compnay wasn’t growing I would guess that moving to SQL wouldn’t be the best solution but I don’t think that I can really help him if he want to stay with FileMaker. I want to help him but I think to do so I will need to move him on to SQL but...since he is a friend I was to make sure that I can justify the move from a business standpoint. I am not as worried about licensing cost as much as administration and ongoing development.

Thanks to everyone for there posts.
