SQL user statistics

  • I am doing a paper for a college programming course. Does anyone know how many companies worldwide use SQL server? How many servers does this constitute? At what rate is SQL use growing? If you can't provide me with close to exact numbers, please point me to a source where I could find them

Try this link. It will be biased towards microsoft of course.

  • I have a feeling that your not going to get any close numbers. The best you may find, if anything, is an educated guess.

Case 1) Many small companies may purchase SQL server but never register the product.

Case 2) Some people may purchase the product, but it doesn't mean they are actually using it.

Case 4) Some companies that may have purchased the product in the past may not be in business anymore for some reason or another.

Case 5) Some companies may not provide accurate information on their use of SQL Server.

Case 6) Some small companies may not even know they have a copy of SQL Server running on their systems because of inexperience in the software they are using or lack of accurate software tracking processes.

Case 7) In countries where copyright laws are not honored in the traditional sense, there may be companies that have bootleg copies of the software.

So any statistical numbers that Microsoft, or anyone else, tauts around out there should be taken with a very big grain of salt.
