SQL Server Windows 98 problem

  • Hi all. I have recently installed SQL server 2000 on my windows 98 machine. However, I cannot start the server. Service manager was not installed for some reason, and I cannot for the life of me work out how to start the server! If I try to connect to the server that should be running on my local machine, I get the error message "SQL server does not exist or access denied". The last time I installed sql server 2000 on this same machine, it installed the service manager and I could use the GUI to start/stop the server. Why is it different this time around? Its very odd, and I have run out of ideas-can anyone help?

  • Did you install Developer's edition or Standard or Enterprise???

If Standard or Enterprise, it will only install the client tools on 98.  You need to install Developer's edition.

  • Thanks Steve, I discovered that in the end. I had Enterprise edition which as you say will only install the client tools. Panic over, I am going to use my laptop with XP.
