Hi all. I have recently installed SQL server 2000 on my windows 98 machine. However, I cannot start the server. Service manager was not installed for some reason, and I cannot for the life of me work out how to start the server! If I try to connect to the server that should be running on my local machine, I get the error message "SQL server does not exist or access denied". The last time I installed sql server 2000 on this same machine, it installed the service manager and I could use the GUI to start/stop the server. Why is it different this time around? Its very odd, and I have run out of ideas-can anyone help?

Did you install Developer's edition or Standard or Enterprise???
If Standard or Enterprise, it will only install the client tools on 98. You need to install Developer's edition.

Thanks Steve, I discovered that in the end. I had Enterprise edition which as you say will only install the client tools. Panic over, I am going to use my laptop with XP.
