SQL server not writing to Event log correctly

  • I have a windows 2003 SP2 server running SQLserver 2000 SP4 (8.00.2187) that relies on an event written to the Windows Event log correctly to trigger an event. I have previously had a server (windows 2000 sp4) running this same application (third party, not compatible with SQL 2005) which did this correctly ( event is id 17052 and is written to the application log with Category (2), type information and source MSSQLSERVER) and resulted in the error message

    Error: 66597, Severity: 10, State: 1

    DCA EOD - processing completed.

On the new server this error is written to the System event and has the following information.

    Event Type:Information

    Event Source:MSSQLSERVER

    Event Category:Disk

    Event ID:17052

    Date:12/12/2008

    Time:6:59:14 AM

    User:N/A

    Computer:DCAXXXXXX

    Description:

The description for Event ID ( 17052 ) in Source ( MSSQLSERVER ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Error: 66597, Severity: 10, State: 1

    DCA EOD - processing completed.

Anyone experience this problem or have a fix for SQL server that resolves this. heaps of Google searching has resulted in nothing concrete as to why the server is not displaying this information correctly.

  • Are you reading the event log directly from the server, or are you reading it from your client machine?

  • I am reading the event log on the server on which the SQL server is installed. I would understand if I were trying to read it from a remote machine that does not have the SQL registry or DLL files installed, but this server has SQL server installed on it.
