Sql Server Newbie

  • Hi Friends,

I want to learn SQL SERVER 2000.

First I want to download the software.

I googled "DOWNLOAD FREE SQL SERVER 2000".

and I found this free download MSDE2000A.exe

My question is > is the software above the right one to download?

are DESKTOP ENGINES behaves the same as the SERVER ENGINE?

What I mean is if I learn all the command is DE they are also applicable

    to SERVER EDITION.

Can you suggest what is the right installer to use, and the link to free download?

Thanks a lot to all of you

  • Hello,

I assume you have a very good reason for wanting to learn the 2000 version of SQL Server, as I guess you are aware that there are free versions of both 2005 and 2008 (the “Express” Editions)?

Also you can download trial versions of the full s/w, which allow you to evaluate (and learn) the product for a few months.

    Please see: http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/default.aspx

Regardless of which Edition you learn on, the core features are essentially the same, so you won’t be wasting your time.

  • Thank you very much john 🙂

I need SQL 2000 because the company i will be joining with soon has this

    Database version.

  • Hello again,

If you need to learn SQL Server from a Developer perspective then personally I would recommend using one of the more modern Express Edition versions. The differences are not that big and you can read the “What’s New” Sections to discover them.

If you are going to be working in a DBA role, then best to use an evaluation version as the free Editions do not include a lot of the Admin related functionality e.g. no Agent, Partitioning, Indexed Views, Clustering etc.
