SQL server License

  • Hi All,

    We are looking to install SQL 2005 for our reporting database, and wondering if we can re-use the SQL 2000 license once the server is decommissioned.

    The license type is:

    SQL server 2000 Enterprise Edition with Processor (4) license

    I’ve been advised that SQL licensing is not version specific, Please let me know in detail about this

    Appreciate your help on this..

    Thanks in advance,

    Vamshi..

  • SQL Licensing is version specific in a fashion, where you can downgrade but not upgrade.

    So in this instance as you are upgrading from 2000 to 2005 you will need to purchase the current licenses for SQL, which are SQL2012 (might still be able to purchase 2008, but that might be a long shot).

  • If you're on a volume license agreement or a software assurance program, you'll need to buy the 2012 licensing option which is per-core not per-processor.

    This can be expensive so alternatively you can still buy the 2008 retail pack. Know however that you're out of luck for support from Microsoft.

    You cannot use the 2000 license as it cannot be upgraded for free (unless you're Bill Gates' next door neighbour, of course).

    Note to developers:
    CAST(SUBSTRING(CAST(FLOOR(NULLIF(ISNULL(COALESCE(1,NULL),NULL),NULL)) AS CHAR(1)),1,1) AS INT) == 1
    So why complicate your code AND MAKE MY JOB HARDER??!:crazy:
