I saw this over on the SQL 2008 general forum. Two quick thoughts: We know most managers are looking for the least expensive way to handle data so this might be a way to remove some local DBA staff. I think it would depend upon the sensitivity of the data and contractual arrangements with your clients ( would they allow their data to be stored that way ).
Opportunities usually crop up for talented folks so I'm going to look at the glass as if half-full rather than half-empty. ( perhaps Microsoft will be hiring more data management staff -- I could deal with the rain in Seattle ) But I may add this to the whole Agile Developement ( who needs a DBA? ) idea as a dark cloud on the career horizon.

Announcing - SQL Server Data Services at MIX08
At Mix08, Ray Ozzie announced SQL Server Data Services (SSDS), previously codenamed “Sitka”. SSDS is a web-facing, storage and data processing service exposed over HTTP (via REST or SOAP). Built on top of the SQL platform, SSDS is a highly scalable, pay-as-you-grow cloud-based data storage service.
FYI:
If you are attending MIX08, Nigel Ellis will be delivering a session on SSDS on Thursday at 8:30am in the Delfino 4005 Room. Session recording as well as slides will be available within 24 hours at http://sessions.visitmix.com.

No responses on this topic yet. Today's editorial deals with it. Perhaps the topic is too new or just doesn't touch DBA-types where they currently live -- too busy trying to get through today's problems to worry about this. Or maybe I have it in the wrong forum.

This partially removes the need for a DBA, but not completely. There is no query tuning here, just storage services. I guess that helps, but if you depend on this, you still need to make your own backup of the data.
