Auditing tracks changes to data and/or objects in SQL Server so that actions can be attributed to a person or process. Auditing is often implemented to conform with government regulations such as those resulting from the Sarbanes-Oxley Act or because a government agency, such as the IRS U.S. Dept. of Defense, requires it as a prerequisite for sharing data.
There are several good articles about auditing SQL Server on this site. Use the search option to find them.
