  There is information in Books Online about SQL Server architecture. However, your best sources are two particular books:

  Inside SQL Server 2000 by Kalen Delaney

  The Guru's Guide to SQL Server Architecture and Internals by Ken Henderson

  Both of these are excellent books. There are also books in the pipleline for SQL Server 2005.
