SQL server 2012 on VMware FT

  • My company decide to go for VMWare FT and run SQL 2012 on it without any SQL server HA.

Before this we run clustering on Windows 2008R2 (physical server) and SQL 2008R2.

Just need to ask some question about good and bad to go for this route.

If you have experience about this situation, please share.

    Thank you in advance.

  • A massive topic best served via thorough reading / research. When I want to know about virtualisation I go to Denny Cherry & Jonathan kehayias blogs / articles / videos.

  • Thank you all.

I try to google it, does not get much info.

On my production box ( VMware FT with SQL 2012), I check performance by Solarwinds DPA, and found unnecessary high in disk I/O and Network round trip.

Also have questions about hugh amount of block from shared(S) Lock.

I am fully understand that VMWare FT is for VMware level issue, not for application issue.

The big question is how VMWare FT interact with SQL server 2012, how can it make second copy of data to secondary and will it be ok?, due to hot copy (I mean SQL still running). VM guy told me it use transaction something.

This SQL server will be used by less than 120 concurrent users but it is mission critical server.

Unfortunately my organization did not agree to set up the test box for this situation, so I can not have any invasive testing.

    I will keep looking.

Please feel free to add any comment or suggestion that I can test it for more in detail.

    Thank again.

    JJ
