SQL Server 2008 Updgrade Issuses

  • We have a SQL 2008 Server that is used as a DB engine for some old accounts package that we only need the use of until the end of January next year (2018).

The Tech that migrated the software from a cloud server to a on site server installed the SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Trial version (ever though the Express would have been ok for this application) which now has expired and as we only need the software for a short time I don’t really want to buy a full Enterprise Licence.

I have tried upgrading the Server Edition in the wizard to Express the wizard reports a successful upgrade! but nothing happens the Server Services still does not starts and reports an error 17051 (Trial Expired).

I can get a developer licence for a reasonable price but will this still not work? I anybody had has success upgrading a SQL server 2008 Enterprise Edition Trial to either Developer or Express any advice very welcome.

    Thanks,

  • I think the the only you can do it is to separately install Express and then attach the mdf and ldf files to your Express default location.

    Thanks
