SQL Server 2008 R2 Protocols - What are they?

    In SQL Server 2008 R2 Configuration Manager, one can configure protocols: Shared Memory, TCP/IP, Named Pipes, VIA. What do these do? What's the difference between one and the other? I've tried searching through MS documentation and doing Google searches, very frustrating. No clear information on this. Can anyone please help me understand what this is all about? Thanks.

    ... do they each apply to different things, or are they options for the same thing, and if so, what's the criterion for selecting one over the other?... That type of thing. thanks!
